FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 1, 2018
Scottsdale, AZ—Local REALTOR® Ali Al-Asady with azarchitecture/Jarson & Jarson Real Estate is doing his part to educate fellow REALTORS®, as well as the public, about “healthy homes” and how to achieve healthy home status. While this is a year-round effort for Ali, a leader in the sustainable real estate market, he finds June an especially rewarding time to pave a greener path of sustainable living and healthier home ownership for all, thanks to the outreach activities of National Healthy Homes Month (NHHM), created by HUD’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes (OLHCHH).
This outreach campaign was designed in 2016 to help people connect the dots between their health and their home. This year’s overarching theme, “Check Your Home; Protect Your Family”, was chosen to create awareness of what it means to have a healthy home by educating families of the importance of assessing one’s home for potential health hazards, and to empower people to make a change in order to create the healthiest home possible for their family.
NHHM is a month-long campaign in June, offering an opportunity to create awareness around housing and its impact on health, to provide resources to encourage local activities, as well as empower families to protect themselves from hazards in their home. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Americans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants are often 2 to 5 times higher than typical outdoor concentrations.”
Currently, millions of U.S. homes have moderate to severe physical housing problems, including dilapidated structure, roofing problems, heating, plumbing and electrical deficiencies, water leaks, pests, damaged paint, and high radon gas levels. These conditions are associated with a wide range of health issues, including respiratory illnesses such as asthma, radon-induced lung cancer, and lead poisoning, to name a few. The health and economic burdens from preventable hazards associated in homes are considerable, and cost billions of dollars.
To that end, Ali has prepared and presented several courses such as “Healthy Home Challenges and Solutions for Real Estate Agents” and “Speaking Green 101”, as well as a one hour seminar to be offered to the public which will be taught Valleywide entitled, “What You Don’t Know About Your Home Can Make You Sick”.
OLHCHH has developed a Digital Resource Toolkit which contains many online resources and materials to assist with building awareness and implementation at the local level.
