Description

The McAlmon House, a residential complex in two parts, is among the most sculptural of the homes Schindler built in his enduring career. Set seemingly precariously on a hilltop, the project heavily reformed an existing small bungalow at street level and utilized it as a dramatized prelude of the main house on the hillside above it. The older structure was rendered almost entirely anew in Schindler’s vocabulary of asymmetrical geometric forms, but integrated the original pitched roof – a tangible reminder of earlier styles of Southern California while actively re-imagining the architecture of Los Angeles’s future.
