Hacienda Alta – R.T. Evans Architect 1929 Adobe

This historic home is located along the “Adobe Corridor” of Camelback Road adjacent to the original Jokake Inn. Designed by Architect R.T. Evans, it was constructed in 1929 by the grandparents of the current owners. Over 1.5 acres, this property is located on the third tee of the Phoenician Resort’s Canyon Golf Course and offers 3 bedrooms in the main house plus an attached guest casita. The natural desert grounds look out to romantic views of Camelback Mountain that are simply profound.  Thankfully this home has been maintained in remarkably original condition, with few unnecessary modifications.

All the original design elements are retained and the details are superb. It is a unique Spanish Eclectic home that contains design elements influenced by Pueblo Revival and Monterey designs of the period.  In addition to the massive Adobe Construction of the main house, the interior wood work is mostly original redwood, with hardware intact. The floors are mostly original wood and integral red concrete. The home now offers central HVAC, recently installed.

Architect R.T. Evans is well known for his work in the valley, most notably the adjacent Jokake Inn, the Kellogg House (Now Casa Blanca) and the recently restored Eisendrath House located at Papago Park.  This well documented home is a rare survivor in an area known for it’s gracious past and definitive history that married climate, winter visitors, Arcadia-area citrus production and the very early formation of our Valley’s tourist and destination industries. The immediate surroundings offer a deep collection of restored historic adobe homes.
