Stop Making Buildings

Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture Dean Aaron Betsky visits the ASU Design School, as part of ongoing their Lecture Series.

Truly resilient architecture would open up and reuse what we already have. Rather than wasting both space and unrenewable natural resources on making new buildings that will never be as good as what we have, we should reuse existing materials, sites, and structures; rethink our discipline as a tactical opening up of our existing environments so that that they can be more human, humane, and open; and replace the notion of the genius designer creating monuments for the ages out of his (not her) head and imposing them on the rest of us with the idea of an architecture that reimagines our world. This lecture will survey current buildings and other evidence of architecture to argue that the best and most resilient architecture today goes beyond building to create a more sustainable, open, and beautiful human-made world.
